🌊 Europe is turning a blind eye to ship pollution. Result: our oceans are suffocating! Hydrocarbons, plastic waste, toxic emissions… Why does the inaction of European states jeopardize the future of our seas? Analysis.

🌍 Is Europe complicit in a silent ecological disaster?

Our oceans are in danger. Yet, Europe, which claims to be at the forefront of the ecological transition, is letting it happen. 🚢 Every day, thousands of ships pollute our seas with impunity, due to a lack of strict controls and deterrent sanctions.

In 2023, maritime transport generated over 1 billion tons of CO₂, equivalent to Japan’s annual emissions. But that’s not all:

🔴 Oil spills: a single oil spill is enough to annihilate an ecosystem.
🔴 Invisible toxic discharges: sulfur oxides (SOx) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) destroy marine biodiversity and affect human health.
🔴 Lost containers: 1,500 fall into the sea every year, carrying hazardous substances.

And yet… Europe does not tighten the screws on polluters. Why? 🤔

🚢 Maritime transport, an untouchable giant?

Global trade relies on the merchant navy. 90% of goods are transported by sea. And the large shipping companies wield colossal economic power 💰, directly influencing political decisions.

Although regulations exist, their enforcement remains too lenient. Here are the main gaps:

Nearly non-existent sanctions: Less than 1% of ships are inspected in European waters.
Limited low-emission zones: Only the North Sea and the Baltic Sea impose cleaner fuels.
Too few green technologies: Only 3% of ships use LNG or anti-pollution filters.

💡 Yet, there are concrete solutions. But Europe is slow to implement them…

🔥 Testimony: The Mediterranean, an ecological time bomb

📍 Concrete case: the narrowly avoided catastrophe

Last January, a tanker lost control due to a mechanical failure off the coast of Marseille. 🌊 With its 500,000 liters of fuel on board, it could have caused a catastrophic oil spill. Fortunately, it was towed in time.

But how many other accidents go unnoticed? The Mediterranean accounts for 7% of global maritime pollution while it represents only 1% of the global ocean.

📢 And if we do not act now, it will be too late…

🌱 Solutions: how to save our oceans?

🔹 Demand more control and sanctions 💼 → Europe must impose deterrent fines on polluting companies.
🔹 Expand low-emission zones 🌎 → Fuel with 0.10% sulfur must be mandatory everywhere, not just in the North Sea.
🔹 Accelerate green innovation 🚢 → Promote electric and hybrid cargo ships through subsidies.
🔹 Raise public awareness 🎓 → Share this article and sign petitions to pressure decision-makers.
