🌍 The first inhabitants: long before Christopher Columbus

Unlike other Caribbean islands, Christopher Columbus does not linger on Saint Lucia during his passage in 1502. It is the French who first attempt to settle there in 1605… but the Caribs won’t let that happen! 💥

Saint Lucia becomes a true strategic chessboard for colonial powers. Between the 17th and 19th centuries, the island comes under French then British domination fourteen times. A record in Caribbean history!
Why such tenacity?

🛑 Slavery and its abolition: a dark period
As in the rest of the Caribbean, Saint Lucia becomes a sugar island where slavery rages. Thousands of Africans are deported and forced to work under inhumane conditions. It is not until 1834 that slavery is abolished under British rule, but former slaves do not immediately gain real rights…
Even today, the descendants of these slaves shape the vibrant culture of Saint Lucia, through music, traditions, and Creole cuisine. 🎶🍛
🎆 Towards independence and a unique identity
🇬🇧 Under British Empire until 1979
Despite French influences (notably in language and surnames), Saint Lucia remains under British rule until February 22, 1979, the date of its independence.
Today, the island is part of the Commonwealth but proudly displays its double cultural identity. English is the official language, but French Creole is still widely spoken.
