Are you planning a getaway to the sun to escape the Canadian winter? Wait a second. The Government of Canada has just issued a serious alert on several ultra-popular destinations, including Jamaica and the Bahamas. And it’s not without reason…
😧 Dream vacations… turning into nightmares?
The beach, rum, reggae… Yes, Jamaica is dreamy. But behind the postcard, Canadian authorities are raising the alarm: armed assaults, scams, neighborhoods to avoid, the safety climate has clearly deteriorated.
The same goes for the Bahamas: armed robberies, burglaries, assaults… Incidents are becoming more frequent in very touristy places like Nassau or Freeport.
📍 To absolutely avoid according to authorities
In Jamaica:
- Kingston: red zones due to frequent violence 🚨
- Montego Bay: beware of scams near hotels 🏨
- Never go out alone at night 🌙
In the Bahamas:
| Area | Main Risk | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Nassau | Armed robberies | Avoid public transport 🚍 |
| Freeport | Physical assaults | Move in groups 👥 |
| Exumas | Burglaries | Use a safe 🧳 |
🛡️ How to travel without freaking out?
No way you’re giving up your vacation, but prepare like a pro:
- Regularly check government advice before your departure
- Activate alert notifications on your phone
- Keep your travel plans discreet (goodbye live Insta stories 📵)
And above all:
- Do not wear your jewelry in the city
- Favor group excursions
- Book your transport in advance via reliable providers
💔 Tourism in crisis
These alerts are not without consequences for local economies. Fewer travelers = empty hotels, unemployed guides, and a gloomy atmosphere.
But good news: some countries are reacting! Enhanced security, festivals to attract tourists, renovations… There is a real desire to restore their image. And good for them!
😷 Don’t forget your health!
Before you leave, also think about vaccinations and health precautions:
- Bottled water is mandatory
- Avoid raw foods
- Recommended vaccines: hepatitis A/B, typhoid 💉
✈️ In summary:
The sun, yes. But not at the cost of your safety. The Caribbean remains beautiful, but it’s better to travel informed and prepared. Want to know which destinations are safe in 2025? We’ll tell you very soon…
